Neko PortraitsYou are here: Andrew Ho > Personal > Photos > Neko Neko was our bunny. He was a Netherlands dwarf rabbit. We bought him from a PetSmart in Chicago in summer of 1998. He was our first mammalian pet, and was our first and only lagomorph. He was a friendly but naughty house rabbit who lived in a fine two-story rabbit house from Leith Petwerks. His favorite food was Pepperidge Farm Bourdeaux cookies. He would chase you down if you had one. He also liked sweet biscuits and fruits of pretty much all kinds. As with most rabbits, he enjoyed ripe bananas and fresh greens. Neko was a very sweet rabbit, who loved nothing more than getting pet on the head and body, and would lick your nose as a reward. Neko got along with Zeus pretty well, and Zeus would often hang out sitting on Neko's box which we made from a Moët & Chandon champagne crate. Moy and Neko had a more tenuous relationship. Sometimes they sniffed noses, but other times they would chase each other.
Neko means "cat" in Japanese. This is not meant to be confusing. Neko was so named because there is a Neko computer program where a little animated cat runs around chasing your cursor. In the original windowed versions, if your cursor left the boundaries of the window, the cat would scratch at the sides of the window. Like most bunnies, Neko would dig at obstacles in his way (like magazines, or books, or cat toys, or bags, or sofas). He looked like the little computer Neko when he did this. We usually didn't call him Neko anyway. We generally referred to him as "bunsers" (pronounced bun'serz) or just plain "bunny." Neko passed away in 2006. We still miss him! |
